Madly in Love

*Warning:  If you have small children looking over your shoulder, find an activity for them before proceeding to read this next bit lest ye have many a question to answer later.

For a few years now, Diva has asked us if Santa is real.  We tell her every time that St. Nicholas was a real person and have, I feel, skirted around the issue quite successfully.  Neither confirm nor deny...we would make good politicians.  ;)

Not to say that the child has not tried to stump us.  Her Christmas list to Santa had included requests like a bell from the reindeer collar or snowflakes from the North Pole and always a letter from Santa.

Obviously, this is-he-or-isn't-he topic was weighing heavily on her mind and out of the blue she blurted, "Does Santa sleep with you?"

I was not facing her at that moment and had to think quickly on how to react to her innocent question.  I just turned to her and smiled.  She half-smiled back then moaned, "Awwwww" while sticking her bottom lip out in a pouty way.

That was when I looked my then 10 year old girl square in the eye and said, "And one day, Santa will sleep with you."

She grinned a fabulous braces-filled grin and asked, "So it was you who wrote all of the letters?"  I just smiled.

There was a moment of silence then she concluded, "I think I will still believe in Santa 'cause it's so much fun."

That's perfectly fine with me my little Diva, but spare a thought for your poor mother and let's not ask for nearly impossible items on the Christmas list anymore, okay?

  1. A bittersweet moment, to be sure! I always tell my boys that if they don't believe in Santa, there will be no gifts under the tree. That usually squelches probing questions. Nice thinking on your feet, though!
