Madly in Love

Engineer and I attended the Entreleadership conference in Dallas several weekends ago.

One of the areas talked about was that of personality types; specifically how the various attributes affected the way you communicated information and ideas with people in your business.

The premise was that people basically fall into four categories (dominance, influencing, stable, or compliant) where their main focus is either what, who, why, or how.  To effectively get across information, one needed to know of which type the person they are talking to is.

Chris Hogan, the speaker on this subject, was fantastic and possibly my favorite of the weekend.

He gave an example of how he and his wife differ in their communication styles:

Chris' story was that he and his wife had some friends who were having a baby.  He took the call and spoke with the new father.  Chris thought he was doing the right thing by relaying the information he deemed important to his wife.  He got the gender of the baby, the name, and that everyone was okay.  When he began telling his wife the news, she wanted details like length, weight, what time it was born, if she had it naturally or by C-Section, how long will they be in the hospital, etc.  His wife is a details oriented (why) person whereas he is a just get the facts (what) person.

With that in mind...

We sat down over a lovely dinner that evening, Engineer looked deep into my eyes, swirled the contents of his wine glass, and said, "I am completely in love with you."
>My eyes fluttered.<
"I adore you."
>My cheeks blushed.<
"It doesn't matter how long we are together, I will always..."
>Swoon.  Yes, yes, go on...<
"...forget to ask a new father all those details."

Um, that took an unexpected turn...

I smiled and said, "That's okay because I don't need all of the details just..."

As I was about to finish my sentence, he interrupted, "If mom & baby are okay, when are they coming home, how is hubby holding up, did they need anything, was there a food rotation set up for them...."

We laughed.
He was exactly right.

1-4-3 EM for knowing this "who" person so well.

  1. Love it! I think I'm probably a 'who' person as well.

    1. Truly, the personality types were the most intriguing part of the weekend for me. It was eye opening and actually helpful in the way I try to talk to our daughter now since she is a "why" person. :)

  2. Hilarious! And that's pretty much our dynamic as well - I have a gazillion questions, he gets the basics, and I'm perpetually frustrated. Not really, but sometimes. :)
