What's Cooking?

Sauteed apples are one of those dishes that get overlooked.  They are so easy and tasty and kids love them.  The other night I decided to try something a little different with them and we liked the results.  They go great with ham or bacon sandwiches or even in a grilled cheese sandwich.

Sauteed Apples

Apples, sliced
Bacon Grease
Demerara Sugar (or brown sugar)

After you have cooked some bacon in your cast iron skillet, leave some of the grease in the skillet.  Throw in the apple slices and toss them around a bit to coat them with the grease.  Then, sprinkle a little sugar over the top of them and cook the apples through.  Serve immediately.

I said these were tasty I didn't say they were healthy.  ;)

  1. They do look tasty! I had sauteed apples at a restaurant a few years ago, and they were so good! I'll have to try this next time I get apples.

    1. I don't have one of those either - just a plain old knife and a pair of hands. :)

  3. Hi there! I have never tried this with bacon grease.. but I use a little pad of butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract and ground cinnamon. They are delicious! I'll have to try yours with the bacon grease though. YUMMO!

    1. I served a slightly different version of "stewed apples" to our youth group a couple of months back. They went ga-ga over them. They sound very much like your version. The bacon grease just makes them slightly savory. Thanks for dropping by Ms. Carly!

    1. Howdy Miz Helen! I figured that apples cooked in bacon fat wasn't a new idea, but it was new to us. :)
