Perfectly Practical #90 - Traveling in Colder Climates

Being of proud Texan stock, I don't really do cold.  As in, below 65F is uncomfortable and below 40F my body goes into automatic shut down no matter how many layers I have on.

Last Sunday we looked at the forecast for this past weekend and it said the weather in Rolla, MO was going to be in the 20s.  THE 20S!!!!!!!  Good grief!

So while I was gathering up our clothes to pack, I also gathered up supplies for the car in case we were caught in a snow drift.  Yes, I equate temperatures in the 20s with blinding blizzards.

If you are traveling in downright frigid climes this season, consider packing the car with the following:
  • A blanket per person
  • Water bottles
  • Cell phone and GPS chargers
  • Food, especially protein like tuna, beef jerky, instant packets of soup, or peanut butter
  • Small shovel
  • Kitty litter
  • Black garbage sacks
  • First aid kit
  • Scarves, hats, gloves, and coats for everyone
  • Flashlight
  • Pocketknife
  • Matches
  • Baby wipes
  • Paper & pens (and other activities to keep little ones busy)
  • Pet food and an extra blanket for your animals (if bringing them along)
  • Extra batteries
  • Ice scraper
  • Chains (for tires)
  • De-icer
  • Spare tire
  • Emergency contact list
  • Medication/allergy list
  • Map
  • Hand warmers
  • Lip salve
  • Portable kettle (plugs into cigarette lighter for hot water on the road - my favorite travel item)
  • Instant coffee and tea bags
  • Reflective triangle
That seems like a pretty long list but for the most part, the items don't take up much room.  And let's face it, if you were caught on the side of the road in a snowstorm, you sure would be thankful you were prepared.

Happy travels!

  1. That's a really good list. We don't have to travel this year, but will probably head north next year. My blood has thinned living in the south and just the thought of the 20's makes me shiver!

  2. Thanks Ms. Kristin. I love the thought of cold - the beauty and peacefulness of snow, the coziness of thick sweaters, etc. The reality is that once it gets below about 40, my eyes water like crazy, my nose runs, and my whole body turns into what can only be described as a violently girating blob of convulsions and I can hardly stay upright. It's not pretty.
