Madly in Love Monday

I am madly in love with my little Diva this Monday because she gets so involved in her books.

When the child walks into my room, tears streaming from her eyes, I instinctively ask what's the matter; but, as I notice the book she is tightly clutching to her chest, I know exactly what the matter is.

"I've finished it."
You've finished what?
"Where the Red Fern Grows."  More tears and a slight heave of the shoulders.
How did it end? I know how it ends, it's one of my favorite books.  If you don't know how it ends, look away now.
"THEY DIED!"  Sob.  Sniff.  Tears still streaming.  Shoulders heaving more.
How did they die?

She proceeded to tell me the circumstances surrounding their deaths and about the red fern Indian legend but you had to decipher it through a series of snorts, sniffles, and sobs.

"Why didn't you circle the chapter where they died and write 'Don't read this chapter'?"*
Because, you can't do that in the last chapter of a book, you have to know how it ends.  Did you like the book?
A grin spreads across her tear stained face and she says, "YES!!" then skips off to find another book to read, fall in love with, and get emotionally attached to - or maybe just a Stormbreaker or Percy Jackson novel.

1-4-3 DM for bringing a little extra emotion and drama into our lives.

*The first time I read Where the Red Fern Grows I was about her age and I wrote those words on the page the chapter in which there a boy, an axe, and an accident collided. If you've read the book, you'll know what I'm talking about and if you haven't read the book go get it. It is an American classic.

  2. Howdy Ms. Shay! It has been a gift to have a child that enjoys reading like she does - especially since it sure does cut down on the "I'm bored" syndrome. I hope your little girl falls in love with reading too. :)
